Every place has a story.Find the headlines, the local voices, and the developments that matter.
Color shows the highest active alert in a region. Affected areas may be much smaller. Uncolored regions are not necessarily safe.
Keep the places you care about a click away.
Headlines come from Google News RSS searches for each region over the past 48 hours, with Bing News RSS and a direct publisher RSS feed for each region as fallbacks when feeds are slow, unavailable, or return no recent stories. Feed order is preserved; “Top stories” is a discovery feed, not an independently ranked or exhaustive list. Stories may mention a region without being local to it. The feed provider is shown above the headlines. Google headlines link through Google News; backup headlines link to their publisher.
The newspaper directory is a curated selection of local newspapers and independent newsrooms, covering all 50 U.S. states, D.C., and all 13 Canadian provinces and territories. Canadian selections vary with the number of verified local outlets Search the selected place’s list by name or city. U.S. regions also link to Paperboy for a broader, separately maintained directory. Canadian regions link to the National NewsMedia Council member list; Quebec also has French-language publishers in our selection. Our selection is not comprehensive, and publisher websites and availability can change. Some newspapers now share a publishing platform while retaining their local coverage pages. Publisher subscriptions may apply. Adding a directory entry does not change which stories the news feeds return.
Click a U.S. state to explore its counties and county equivalents, then choose an area on the map or in the county selector. County headlines cover the past seven days and use local area and state names. Connecticut regional searches also use verified member-town names. Google News and Bing are supplemented by verified local publisher feeds and location-matched stories from a state publisher. Unrelated statewide publisher stories are excluded from county results. Statewide stories remain below the county results and are not a combined ranking of every county. A quiet county feed can have no recent matches; its search is not comprehensive or a guarantee that a story occurred inside the boundary. The Newspapers tab remains a state directory; its entries have not been assigned to individual counties.
County geometry and names use the U.S. Census 2025 generalized county boundaries, covering 3,144 counties and equivalents in the 50 states and D.C. Connecticut uses nine planning regions; Louisiana includes parishes and other states include independent cities, boroughs and census areas. These generalized boundaries are for display. County outlines do not indicate safety conditions.
Click a Canadian province or territory to explore its local regions, then select an area on the map or in the local-region selector. These use all 293 Statistics Canada 2021 census divisions, including counties, regional districts, MRCs and statistical equivalents. The 2021 names and boundaries are a retained snapshot and may differ from current municipal administration. Some divisions are statistical areas rather than governments. Yukon is a single census division covering the territory. Regional searches use verified member communities, with French searches for Quebec, and show the past seven days. Province-wide or territory-wide headlines remain below the local stories. Search hubs are selected communities, not a complete list; a search match does not guarantee the event occurred inside the boundary. Newspapers and official alerts remain at province/territory level.
U.S. official alerts come from the National Weather Service. Extreme severity is red; severe alerts and warnings are orange; other active advisories and watches are gold. Tests, expired alerts, and cancellations are excluded. Canadian alerts come from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). ECCC red, orange, and yellow risk colors map to critical, warning, and advisory; where no risk color is supplied, warnings are orange and watches/statements are gold. Region colors summarize alerts affecting some areas within a state, province, or territory.
Shootings and other incidents can be added using “Mark an incident.” These are your personal, browser-only notes, with a source URL and expiry time, in either country. They are not independently verified or shared with others. A dark red state with a purple border identifies your incident marker. News keywords alone never trigger a safety color.
Feeds refresh every five minutes while this page is open. Recent headlines are cached on the server and in this browser so previously visited states can display immediately while updates load. Cached results show when they were last checked; statewide stories older than 48 hours and county and Canadian local-region stories older than seven days are excluded. Empty responses never replace usable cached headlines. Manual refresh requests new headlines; failed requests show an unavailable or stale label and retry automatically after 30 seconds, up to twice while viewing this place’s stories. This map supplements official local guidance; it is not an emergency notification service.
Map boundaries: US Atlas / U.S. Census Bureau. Alaska and Hawaii shown as insets. Canada: Statistics Canada, 2021 provincial and territorial boundaries, simplified for display under the Statistics Canada Open Licence. The country maps use separate scales.

An incident marker applies to the region for visibility; it does not mean danger affects the whole region. Adding another marker replaces your existing note for that region.
